Character Info
Name: Ilsa
Canon: Granblue Fantasy
Canon Point: Post-"Spaghetti Syndrome"
Age: 28
Background: We know next to nothing about Ilsa's childhood, only that she was naturally talented at marksmanship from a very young age. Something of a protege, she was likely recruited by Society based on this talent alone.
There is not much known about Society as an organization, as much of their hierarchy and missions are clouded in mystery, but they seem to be mostly focused on technological research. Specifically, they are interested in weapons that can destroy Primal beasts, and deploy their members to retrieve such weapons or destroy powerful primal beasts. Their primary enemy are known as the Foe, and they are even more mysterious than Society itself, although we now know that they are an ancient race who originate from the moon.
We know that Ilsa has not suffered much hardship, as evident by her Skill fate episode of her Light SSR, wherein we are offered a flashback of her early training days as a cadet. In this episode, we see that she is arrogant and confident in her abilities, and her trainer, Dylan, notes that she is not ready to move on, as she has never experienced failure or struggle. It is only after she is captured and has to be saved by this same trainer that she learns humility and resolves to learn as much as possible from Dylan.
Dylan is most likely the reason for why she chooses the career route of drill sergeant herself. Within Society, she functions as someone fairly high up in the ranks (although the chain of command is never outwardly disclosed) whose focus is to train new cadets, especially those who show promise of being worthy of contracting with a seal-type weapon. Throughout most of the Society events, the role she fills is that of a tough-as-nails drill sergeant who accompanies the rest of the Society crew, either as an overseer or as someone dispatched to assist them with matters of seal weapons.
Notably, these weapons are artifacts that were unearthed by Society in ancient ruins. They were actually constructed by the Foe, and the technology is thousands of years old: older then the history books can recount in terms of Skydom history. These weapons seem to have a life of their own, and contract with their user to the point where they can actually begin to overtake the wielder (at least, in Vaseraga’s case).
As of the latest Society event, Society as an organization has been dismantled, and she and her cadets are on the run from the Foe, who are hunting her down in efforts to retrieve her seal weapon: her gun, Nybeth.
Personality: Ilsa is certainly deserving of her title of “demon sergeant”. She earned this reputation among her cadets for being a demanding, ruthless, and at times, downright mean drill sergeant. This is the Ilsa we first meet during her fate episode, and it’s true that she has little difficulty in slipping into that persona, because she truly does expect the best from her cadets. This is, however, a facade. Ilsa is tough on her cadets because she does not tolerate mistakes. Mistakes cause deaths, and Ilsa’s number one mission in life is to ensure that the people under her charge don’t die. So she’s tough on them, and uses crass language, expletives, and unflattering insults to make sure they never falter in their attention to their tasks. She puts in so much effort into this facade that she often practices her angry looks and insults in front of the mirror, and has to psyche herself up before facing her cadets.
This facade is also a way of ensuring that she keeps professional distance from her cadets. Ilsa values the idea of making sure that she does not get too familiar with them. This is so that not only so that she can keep their respect and exercise her authority, but also to ensure that they look out for their peers and build camaraderie amongst each other. It should come as no surprise, then, that Ilsa goes through a lot of effort to maintain “work Ilsa” and “real Ilsa”. She makes it a point to not spend time with her subordinates outside of work, lest they become too familiar.
Unfortunately, Ilsa is also an extreme workaholic, which means she really doesn’t have much of a social life, or friends. She admits that she’s rather lonely, and usually doesn’t have anyone to go on outings with. She’s more than happy to partake in a desserts date with the Captain for that reason, and it is during this fate episode that we see that she has an enormous sweet tooth. Around sweets, a softer, happier Ilsa emerges. The crew is surprised to see such a casually content Ilsa, but in truth, she’s actually pretty eager to do things like shopping and dating.
Ah, dating. One might not expect it, but Ilsa is actually a hopeless romantic. She laments that she doesn’t have anyone special to share cake with, and one of the battle lines of her summer version is “I need to get myself a boyfriend.” She enthusiastically ships others around her, offering dating advice to clueless men who can’t figure out how to seal the deal. She’s even got her entire wedding already planned out!
Unfortunately, she doesn’t have much luck in the way of dating. Most men are scared off when they see how intense Ilsa gets when she slips into her fighting mode.
She’s more or less resigned herself to being alone, but that doesn’t stop her from dreaming and hoping that one day she’ll have a significant other that values her. Ilsa is able to push these feelings aside and compartmentalize them fairly easily, since she continues to be dedicated to her job above all else.
Ilsa is fairly well-respected within Society, and it is implied that she takes and carries out orders without question. Most of the time. As Society’s corrupt leadership emerged and the organization more or less fell apart during “Spaghetti Syndrome”, however, Ilsa is shown to be quite capable of defecting and leaving. Her primary loyalty is to her cadets and the rest of the Society crew (Eustace, Beatrix, Zeta, Vaseraga). She is also fiercely loyal to protecting the Captain, Lyria, and Vyrn. Much like the rest of the Society characters, she has come to value them above all else.
Powers: Ilsa is contracted to the seal weapon Nybeth, which is a special gun capable of killing Primal beasts. She’s also highly skilled in marksmanship when it comes to any other type of gun or bow. Like all GBF characters, she is capable of elemental magic. Her attacks specialize in earth, fire, and light magic. She is also skilled in hand-to-hand combat, although her preference is in ranged.
Inventory: Her guns, Nybeth and Takeminakata, her summer swimsuit, her regular uniform, her light outfit, and a pack of bullets.

Ilsa: The veil would be shoulder length. And I would wear an adorable silver tiara on my head.
Lyria: That sounds beautiful! I bet it would look perfect on you!
Ilsa: The venue would be decorated in white. And the pews would be adorned with pink flowers.
Ilsa: You would be able to see well-manicured trees outside the windows and a wide, blue sky above them.
Lyria: Just thinking about it makes me excited!
Ilsa: At the ceremony's start, I would enter the room through large doors, accompanied by a dulcet organ.
Ilsa: With all of my friends and family watching, I would exchange vows, then rings, and finally a kiss.
Lyria: Hehe. That kinda makes me blush.
Ilsa: After that, I would go outside while being showered in petals.
Ilsa: Then I would climb the stairs and toss my bouquet to see who's going to get married next. And finally I'll get whisked away while being celebrated by everyone.
Ilsa: That is my perfect wedding.
